Short answer

Do you need a link-led SEO tool, or one subscription that also covers PPC and wider marketing research?

Choose Ahrefs if backlink research, outreach or competitive link analysis is the core of your work; choose Semrush if you will use its PPC, advertising and wider marketing data as well. Ahrefs starts at $129/month and Semrush at $139/month, so the entry price is not what separates them — scope is.

Choose Ahrefs if

Anyone whose work is link-led — outreach, digital PR, or competitive link analysis — and agencies managing many verified domains.

Choose Semrush if

Teams who need SEO, PPC and competitor research from one subscription and will genuinely use more than the SEO toolkit.

What decides it

Scope
Ahrefs is deliberately narrow: SEO only, no PPC or social tooling. Semrush adds paid search and ad research, which most competitors lack.
Links
Ahrefs is built around its own crawler and link index. Semrush's backlink index is described in our review as respectable but not the largest.
Research at scale
Semrush's Keyword Magic Tool adds intent labels and auto-clustering; Ahrefs' Keywords Explorer groups by parent topic.
Limits
Semrush limits are per user and extra seats are expensive; some Ahrefs reports use credits that can run out mid-audit. Model your team size and audit volume before choosing.
